Landlord Selling the Property - Your Rights
Your landlord wants to sell. What happens to your tenancy and your rights during viewings.
10 min readLast updated: 15 January 2025
Your tenancy doesn't automatically end if your landlord sells the property. The new owner takes over the tenancy with all its existing terms.
Your Rights During the Sale
- Your tenancy continues - you don't have to leave
- The new owner becomes your landlord automatically
- All existing terms of your tenancy remain the same
- Your deposit protection transfers to the new owner
Viewings and Access
- Landlord needs your permission to show buyers around
- They must give reasonable notice (usually 24 hours minimum)
- You can refuse unreasonable viewing times
- You don't have to keep the property tidy for viewings
Check your tenancy agreement - some have clauses about viewings, but these must still be reasonable.
