New Private Rented Sector Ombudsman
A new ombudsman for private tenants. How to complain and get redress.
The Renters' Rights Act creates a new Private Rented Sector Ombudsman. All private landlords will be required to join, giving tenants a new route to resolve disputes.
What the Ombudsman Will Do
- Handle complaints about landlord behaviour and service
- Investigate disputes between tenants and landlords
- Order compensation where appropriate
- Require landlords to take specific actions
How It Will Work
- You must first try to resolve issues directly with your landlord
- If that fails, you can escalate to the ombudsman
- The ombudsman will investigate and make a decision
- Decisions will be binding on the landlord
When It Starts
The exact start date hasn't been announced, but it's expected to be operational by 2026/2027.
This will be free to use and should be faster than going to court for many issues.
