Universal Credit and Housing Costs
How the housing element of Universal Credit works, payment timing, and what to do if it doesn't cover your rent.
The housing element of Universal Credit helps pay your rent. However, it's calculated based on Local Housing Allowance rates, which may not cover your full rent.
How Housing Element is Calculated
- Based on Local Housing Allowance (LHA) rates for your area
- LHA rates depend on the number of bedrooms you're entitled to
- Single under-35s usually only get shared accommodation rate
- Paid directly to you (not your landlord) by default
If Housing Element Doesn't Cover Rent
- Check if you can get a Discretionary Housing Payment (DHP)
- DHPs can cover shortfalls but are temporary and discretionary
- Consider negotiating lower rent with landlord
- Look for cheaper accommodation if the gap is large
You can request Alternative Payment Arrangements to have housing element paid directly to your landlord if you're in arrears or struggling to budget.
